By 8 a.m. Alec is ready to go to school. I stayed in his class the whole time and will until he gets his confidence back. Even though he blends in very well, he often ‘looks’ for me to make sure I am there. Alec was an easy kid today. Alec’s teacher is the Principle for playgroups and kindergarten. She’s also a psychiatrist. Alec somehow opened up with her immediately. In Alec’s class, they have around 19 kids with 4 teachers, to make sure every kid have an equal attention from the teachers.
Alec learned the meaning of the word “Amphibian” today and explained it to Sean when he saw him at home. He also counted to 70, which surprised me quite a bit. He learned to pronounce ‘an’ and adding one letter in front of it like: man, can, van, fan, etc. They taught the kids to read out loud the capital letter ‘M’ and low caps ‘m’ and mumbling the ‘m’ sound to make them remember the letters. It quite amazing the method they use to make the children remember what I think will be boring.
The class also learned how to make orange juice. They then watched a 10-minute movie about how to cross the street involving animals as the characters, with dump trucks and bulldozers (Alec’s favorite). He went home happy and announced to everyone that he just got back from school.
Together with Brad and Renae, Alec, Mom and Dad spent the rest of the day looking for gym equipment, shopping for groceries at Carrefour and having dinner outside. The day ended with Dad reading a book to Alec and Mom tucking him in bed. We have a very happy Alec today.
